Pine Nut

·         Botanical Name: (Pinus Pinea L)

·         English Name: Pine Nut

·         Local Name: Also called as Umbrella or Parasol Pine.

·         Description:  It grows strong in youth and becomes 25 meters in height, in maturity it becomes 60 meters in width. It has a smooth body and horizontal branches are perpendicular to the body. Needle leaves are bright green and 10-20 cm in length. The cones are broad and chestnut in color. Usually they are 10-15 cm in length, 6-10 cm in width. One or two of them facing each other. The seeds are quite long and hard and pale red color. The shape is looks like an inverted egg. Additional it matures in three year.

·         Parts Used: Seeds that are known as the pine nut.

·         Components: It contains 46 percent fixed oil, protein and cellulose also it includes linoleic and oleic acid. Also it has omega 3 and 6, vitamins B and C and some elements which are carotene, iron, zinc, potassium, manganese and phosphorus.

·         Harvest Time: After the third year, from at the beginning of the January to at the end of May.

·         Geographic spread:  Commonly found in the Aegean region
